The theme “Design of Urban Landscapes” blends landscape architecture, urban design, architecture and environmental design to create responsive integrated, urban precincts. By merging natural and built environments, this interdisciplinary approach aims for functional, resilient urban spaces that support diverse communities and improve city identity and well-being.
Within the African context, the design of urban landscapes also invites reflection on the continent’s unique urban dynamics: informal settlements, climatic variability, cultural identities, and evolving development patterns. It encourages designers and scholars to interrogate how landscape and urban design thinking can guide urban growth, regenerate degraded environments, and reimagine African cities as living, ecological systems. Contributions on walkable cities, pedestrian/bicycle-friendly streets and green infrastructure, often through acupuncture-type projects are invited for this forth-coming issue of the Journal.
