As we step into the final stretch of the year, like our president Ruth Wanjiku said, this month’s newsletter feels like a moment of reflection and gentle momentum, a chance to look back at what we’ve achieved and look forward to what we’re still building together across the continent.
In this issue, we highlight the ILASA Bursary extension — an important opportunity for emerging South African landscape architects to access support and advance their studies. We also share updates from across the region, including new collaborations, continuing professional development initiatives, and work that keeps pushing our profession forward.
One feature that is especially close to the heart is our piece exploring the relationship between landscape architecture and the heritage sector. Our discipline sits at a unique intersection: between people and place, memory and ecology, culture and design. Whether through cultural landscapes, natural heritage sites, or community histories embedded in land, landscape architects hold the tools to tell stories, restore meaning, and shape environments that honour both past and future. Many of us are already contributing to this space — through research, fieldwork, documentation, and participation in global networks like ICOMOS and ACHS — and there is so much room for deeper engagement.
As the year winds down, we also invite you to bring your creativity into our shared space. Submissions for the IFLA Africa 2025 Year-End Greeting Card Competition are still open, and we would love to see your artistic responses that celebrate the essence of African landscapes and our profession. The winning design will be featured across all IFLA Africa platforms — a wonderful opportunity to represent our region with pride.
This season is often a reminder that our work is not only technical — it is cultural, environmental, and deeply human. Thank you to everyone who continues to contribute, collaborate, and show up for this profession. Your energy is what keeps our community thriving.
Happy reading, and I look forward to seeing your greeting card submissions!
