Community-Led Resilience in Mozambique: Bairro Novo Beyond the Floods

In Quelimane, Mozambique, the residents of Bairro Novo are taking climate resilience into their own hands. Through the Beyond the Floods project, supported by the Partners for Water programme and Dutch water experts, local communities have co-developed a vision for a safer, more sustainable future.

This inclusive strategy features 60 hectares of mangrove restoration, flood-resilient infrastructure, and new livelihood opportunities like aquaculture and salt production. More than a neighbourhood initiative, Beyond the Floods offers a replicable model for climate adaptation and urban resilience across Zambezia Province.
